This project went on for nearly a decade (approx. 1995-2005). I became a hunter-gatherer of abandoned photographs: those that turned out badly, or wrong, and were therefore left with the printers, or tossed. They’re mostly from family settings: parties, holidays, anniversaries…and were meant to fix significant moments. But chance, error, lack of skill, or other sets of circumstances strip this function from the images. In some cases, they take on an evocative force, an aesthetic which the person who snapped the picture either ignored or didn’t recognize.
My work consists of “recognizing” and preserving this misfit imagery. I used these prints in various ways, but the project mainly involved the production of a book in which I published a broad selection of the shots I found most interesting; with accompanying texts by Nicola Perullo and Giuliano Nannipieri on the concept of error.
The book’s title is “Miracles”, and I owe heavy thanks to Sergio Tossi for its production
